Faithful: True to the Original

Encouragement for your daily walk with God

You’ll probably have to be over 50 years old to remember a commercial about Memorex Cassette Tapes—maybe even to know what Cassette tapes are! But I digress. The commercial featured a famous opera singer. She started her solo and hit an impressive high note. The camera shifted its focus at that moment to show the singer’s silhouette in the background and a crystal glass in the forefront. While the high note still resonated, the glass shattered.

But when the camera widened the angle, it showed a tape recorder on a pedestal. It was playing a tape of the singer’s voice, and an announcer asked this question, “Is it live, or is it Memorex?”

The point of the commercial was obvious; Memorex Cassette Tapes could duplicate sound so accurately, the frequency was so true, that even the recorded version could shatter glass. The recording was true to the original.

I would suggest that is a good representation of what faithfulness is like—true to the original. God is faithful and keeps “...His covenant for of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.” (See Deuteronomy 7:9) He never stops loving those who love Him. He never disappoints those who count on Him. He never, ever deserts those who need Him.

As Christ-followers, it’s a good thing to be true to the original, in other words, FAITHFUL. Faithful in keeping your word. Faithful to your spouse. Faithful in doing good works. Faithful in good times and bad. Faithful(ness) is good for you, “A  faithful man will abound with blessings...” (Proverbs 28:20a)

Faithfulness is a Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). Various translations use the words faith or faithfulness, which comes from the Greek word pistis. Wrapped up in that word is the idea of conviction, especially reliance upon Christ for salvation. (Thayer’s Greek Lexicon)

“Is it live or is it Memorex?” The commercial asked a great question and made the viewer think. Here is a question I have. When it comes to faithfulness... “Is it “(your name here) or is it Jesus? Faithful: True to the Original. When we need help with this, it is always available from our faithful God, through His Holy Spirit.
