Sweet Communion

eDevotion
Encouragement for your daily walk with God

I’ve often said that prayer is the weakest discipline of most Christ followers. It’s sad, really, because prayer is essential for your spiritual growth. It’s so important. you might expect it to be another piece of the “armor of God.” Instead, the Bible teaches us that prayer is to be all-pervasive; we are to pray about everything, everywhere, at all times. Prayer is to the soul what air is to the body. It’s our spiritual lifeline. Our effectiveness as Christ followers is directly related to our prayer life.

How important is it to pray? Jesus told His disciples to be alert and pray always so they would have strength to face what came their way in life [Luke21.36]. Christ followers are instructed to be continually devoted to prayer [Romans 12.12]. The disciples understood this as they continually devoted themselves to prayer [Acts 6.4].

The Apostle Paul told the Philippian Christ followers, “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” [4.6]. He told the Thessalonian Christ followers to “pray without ceasing” 5.17]. He told Timothy to instruct men everywhere to “pray, lifting up holy hands" [1 Timothy 2:8].

Maybe one of our problems is that we were taught as children that prayer is reserved for mealtimes, bedtime, and Sunday School. I think some Christ followers have carried that concept into their adult years.

I like to think of prayer as talking with my best friend. What do I share with my best friend? Every joy, sorrow, victory, and defeat. My best friend likes to hear all about them. Be conscious of your real Best Friend, and take advantage of the sweet communion He has to  offer. Make prayer an ongoing part of your day.

Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.. Ephesians 6.18
