Encouragement for your daily
walk with God
I
am currently teaching a series in prophecy at the church where I pastor. There
is a phrase that comes up often in this study and it is the subject of today’s
eDevotion—The Day of the Lord. You’ll find that phrase throughout the Bible,
and often with an exhortation to prepare for it. As I began to look at the
exhortation more closely, I found that it was typically given to God believers
rather than unbelievers.
The
Day of the Lord often refers to Jesus’ first coming or His second coming, but
it can also refer to any time God comes to His people, either in salvation or
judgment (see: Isaiah 13:6; Joel 2:11; Malachi 3:2). The prophet Amos told the
people of his day that the Day of the Lord would be far different from what the
people expected (Amos 5:18). So when the people thought the Day of the Lord
would come with joy and singing, Amos told them there would be grieving and
judgment of sin. The same could be said of when Jesus came in His day. Many
were caught by surprise because they were expecting the Messiah to come in a
different fashion, a political/military leader, not a babe growing up to be a
sacrifice for sin. Therefore, many did not recognize Him.
Christ
followers look forward to the final day of the Lord, which will be the second
coming of Christ. In the meantime, there will be times when God comes to you,
your family, and friends. Be watchful for the signs of God’s convicting work in
your children, your friends, and your coworkers. Take notice when God begins to
do a special work in the lives of the people in your church. You may discover
that the Day of the Lord is at hand!
For you yourselves know perfectly
that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. (1st Thessalonians 5:2)
