Encouragement for your daily
walk with God
How
does a Christ follower rid him/herself of the sins hindering his/her
relationship with God and each other? Confession! Confession is not just for
those who are comfortable with “spilling their guts,” it is a command. Every
Christ follower should take this to heart. The soul is refreshed as we openly
acknowledge our sinful actions to God and each other.
But
first, this advice. Confession must come out of true repentance to be effective.
Some believe that ‘admission’ is the same as ‘confession,’ but that is not the
case. Confession is about owning up to your sins, turning from them, and
forsaking them. Likewise, don’t hide behind generalities. Be specific: “Lord,
forgive my gossiping tongue.” “Father, forgive my angry outburst against…”
There
may be times when it is necessary to confess directly to those your sin has
offended. Never confess the sins of others; confess only YOUR sins! Confession
is not a sign of weakness; it is evidence of your refusal to allow sin to linger
in your life.
A
desire to please God will compel you to confess your sin and rid yourself of
its oppressive burden.
Confess your trespasses to one
another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective,
fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16
